Day 20: Window Display and Tags

(12 p.m. to 5 p.m)

Today at People Like Art I spent most of the day finishing the window display. I had already cut out the squares the day before so the hard part was finished, so I thought. In actuality the hardiest part of doing this window display was sewing them with the tread and spacing them out.

If it wasn't for my laptop and a couple of disney movies. I don't know how long it would have taken me to finish but I did! After Shannon and I finished placing them on the window. We walked outside to make sure everything look right and that the stringed lines were even with each other. Then after that we kind of had a mini photo-shoot. As you can see in the photo above, I was pretty proud of what I did.

The last thing I did for the day was sew in some care tags and PLA labels on a couple of tops. Then when five o'clock came it was time to pack up and that concluded another week at my internship.

Day 19: Ironing, Pinterest and Window Display

(8 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

Its Spring Break and it feels so good to be off from class. I really needed this break so I can get some last minute sewing done on my collection. Today I went into my internship early, eight o’clock in the morning to be exact.

Shannon had an important meeting to go to, so I would be by myself for a couple of hours. Before she left she had a list of things that she wanted me to complete. The first thing on the list was to iron yards and yards of this fabric that she had dyed the day before. It took me an hour to iron it and when I was done. The fabric was all wrinkled, so of course I was a little frustrated.

The next thing that was on the list was for me to cut out squares for the window display. I had to cut out, blue and black squares using a cutting board. I cut out exactly 209 blue squares and 289 black squares. It wasn't that bad though, I had my good ole computer and the movie 10’000 B.C playing. It didn't take as long as I thought to cut out all those squares. It took my longer to count all of them just because I am a little OCD when it comes to making sure I get the count right.

After that I uploaded the photos from the shoot that we had last week. I couldn't put them on Pinterest yet because the internet wasn't picking up on my computer. So I ate some breakfast and re-ironed the fabric while I waited for Shannon to come back.

When Shannon came back I uploaded the photos from the photo shoot last week on to a new Pinterest board. ( Spring/ Sumer 2014) I am super excited and the photos came out great! It took me about an hour and a half to get all the photos uploaded. I not only had to upload them to that board but also to the Grunge Deco board and link them to her website. Talk about a lot but it was cool.

Now that the Pinterest was updated and I even post some more pins, it was time for me to string all the blue and black squares I cut out.

To string the squares all I need was some thread, a blunt needle and a thimble, then it was like a car in the Indy 500 ( When I say that, I mean it didn't take me long to string them. On the paper Shannon wanted me to do six stringed squares but I only had time to do 3 of them. It was fine though. I got a lot of things done today and I mean A LOT.

It has been a long day but I am so happy I decide to come as early as I did. I got a lot done and I enjoyed every minute of it.
I guess theres nothing else to say but see you tomorrow.

Day 18: Making tags and labels, Measuring and Costing

(12 p.m. to 5 p.m. )

Today at People Like Art I finished up my list from yesterday. I started off the day by finishing the whole sale tags I had started yesterday. After I had finished Shannon showed me how to make PLA labels and washing labels for her garments. I hand printed and cut 21washing labels and PLA labels. I have never hand printed on fabric but that was a real learning experience for me. I don't see how Shannon does it but I have a lot of respect for her.

After I finished making the tags and wholesale labels Shannon had me measure about six of her tops. She said she had to have the measurements so she could have them up for her customers. She also showed me how her whole sale website works, it was really cool too see how the whole wholesale market works. After that it was time to pack up and go home. Until next week, I can't wait to see what I will be doing.

Day 17: 2014 Spring Collection Photo-shoot!!!!

(12 p.m. to 5 p.m.)

Today at People Like Art we are going to have a photo shoot!!! I am super excited and I'm not even in the photo shoot. Before we had the shoot I did a lot of ironing. I have done so much ironing here that I have become an ironing professional. After ironing  all the tops, our model came and it was time to move everything around. We took a lot of photos well Shannon took a lot of photos. I was holding up the light that reflected off the mat. I love how the photos turned out. I know Shannon is going to have a hard time choosing what photos will be on the website. She said that they will be up as early at tomorrow morning.  After the photo shoot it was time to go. The you can check at the new photos and our new tops at People Like Arts website. Until tomorrow, see ya!!!!

Day 16: Ironing, Pinning, Wash Test and Sewing

(12 p.m. - 5p.m.)

Happy Friday, today at PLA I started my day off doing the usual daily task, ironing. I really do believe that I have become a professional at ironing. I ironed about nine or six pieces that she cut out from the dyed fabric she had me iron yesterday. Then Shannon had me tape them down to brown paper so she could start printing on them asap. After that Shannon had me do a wash test on some black fabric that she had bought. Then she had me quick dry it by ironing the fabric. I was surprised that I got the fabric all the way dry because it was soaked.

The next thing on the list was for me to sew the side seams on nine and I repeat nine garments. One thing I have learned from Shannon that has stuck with me. Was to always have an order to the way you do things, for example the way you sew a garment. You start by doing the shoulder seams first then work you way to the side seams and so on. It really makes a difference, especially for me when I am working on my senior collection.

The last thing I did for today was make wholesale tags individually. You never know the hard work that is put into a small design shop until you are interning at one. All the detail that she puts into it makes me appreciate small business owner even more. I didn't finish all of them but I am sure they will be waiting for me next week. Until then, I will see you!

Day 15: Ironing, Heat setting and Doctors Appointment

(12 p.m. to 2:30 .p.m.)

Today was a short day because I had a doctors appointment at 3:15 so I had  to leave at 2:30 to make sure I made it there on time. I started off the day by heat setting three tops that she had printed on the day before. I wish I had gotten pictures of them but when your on a run you don't think about taking pictures.  After that Shannon wanted me to iron some fabrics that she had dyed a couple of days before. I ironed three in total one green colored and two light blue. It was a job ironing them, especially the green one. After I finished ironing, Shannon didn't have anything else for me to do so we talked until it was time for me to go. Shannon also said she had a hands on project for me on Friday and I can't wait to see what it is.

Day 14: Easy day, Ironing and Tagging......

(12 p.m. to 5 p.m.)
Before I got started Shannon and I decided we wanted to see if we could take a look inside the new cafe they were building at the corner. When we got there we were greet by one of the men that was working. He was very nice and talkative. He talked to us about the interior of the cafe and told us that to was going to have a European type of look to it. He even said there was going to be a big chandelier hanging and that the walls are going to be all wood. Shannon asked how long it was going to take them to finish it and he said a month. I really can't wait to see what it will look like and I hope the food will be good. I guess I will have to wait till April and see.

So I started my day off by ironing all the tops that I had sewn together yesterday. That took my about two hours to finish. When I first started her at PLA Shannon told me that when I iron ( or anything that I am doing) I should have a step by step way that I do it. So with ironing I always start at the bottom and start my way up. I will always do this just so it can become a habit and I won't miss anything. It like a check list to ironing and it works.

After I finished ironing Shannon had three tops for me to tag then iron. I made sure that before I sewn the PLA label that it was straight and not crooked, I had to take out a couple of them before because that weren't straight. It can me hard to get them perfect but I do. When I got everything tagged and ironed, Shannon put the price tags on them and hung them up in the shop. There wasn't really anything else to do, so I worked on homework till it was time to go.

Day 13: Fixing, Serging and Tagging.....

(12 p.m. to 5 p.m.)
This post will probably be a short one just because I did two thing that took me all day to do. Today I fixed two tops that I had sewn backwards, the next time I have to make sure I pay attention. Shannon told me that it can be hard to tell but I should really pay more attention. It was a lesson well learned. After I finished reserving the two tops I messed up,  I tagged them and before I knew it, I was time to go. Tomorrow I will iron them and put the price label on them.
